Coastal Academy Student Featured on Good Morning America

Fifth-grade Coastal Academy student Maizy Gordon is working to diversify the lineup in competitive surfing. She is part of an organization called Black Girls Surf that supports black female surfers worldwide. She loves to surf and play the drums and hopes to compete in the Olympics one day. CAHS Senior Named National Merit Finalist

Congratulations to CAHS senior Alexander Usher, a National Merit Scholarship Finalist! Merit Scholar designees have demonstrated exceptional academic ability and the potential for success in rigorous college studies and have scored in the top 1% on the PSAT nationally. Alexander has already been awarded scholarships from several universities based upon his designation as a National Merit Finalist but hasn’t yet decided where he will attend college in the fall. As the only Finalist selected from any high school in Escondido, he will also be competing with students from around the US for additional scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation this spring.

CAHS Senior Recognized as Rising Star

The Escondido Chamber of Commerce recognized CAHS senior Caleb Schanzenbach as a Rising Star of the Month! Caleb’s teachers nominated him for his incredible work ethic, character, and empathy for others. Caleb was also recognized for the amazing accomplishments he was able to achieve during COVID. While many focused on what was lost, Caleb authored a book and pursued a variety of interests and passions that make life more full. “Caleb is so deserving of this recognition,” stated CAHS Principal Dana Moen, “He leads with heart, courage, and honors the Caiman Way.”

Cheer Team Places at National Competition

Coastal Academy High School’s Varsity Cheer placed 4th in their division at the 2022 Jams Nationals. Held in Las Vegas, Nevada, JAMZ Nationals is the largest independent Cheerleading Worlds bid competition. This invite-only event hosted over 150 teams from across the United States. Congratulations to the team for their hard work, determination, and success!

Students Thrive in Middle School Remodel

Classical Academy Middle School (CAMS) recently remodeled a newly purchased facility on Washington Avenue. The remodel added three classrooms and office space and made improvements to the outdoor quad. Covered seating, turf, a basketball court, and landscaping were also a part of the renovation project. Additional classrooms and outdoor space will allow the program to continue to grow and expand and provide students with expanded outdoor learning space.

How to Help Our Kids With Their Big Emotions

Children of all ages are dealing with numerous emotions daily and often lack the basic skills to process them. Author, speaker, and Marriage and Family Therapist, Cyndie Claypool DeNeve, explains how to teach children to identify these emotions through conversation. Asking questions can lead to a meaningful discussion, shared mutual understanding, and the validation of feelings and emotions. This helps children process complicated feelings and learn to release them.
