Classical Academy High School sisters, Ella & Leila Perko recently returned from lobbying on Capitol Hill. Both girls were born with a rare, genetic metabolic disorder, Phenylketonuria (PKU). If not detected at birth, PKU can cause irreversible neurological damage. They credit Newborn Screening for saving their lives and now share their story with Congressional members, educating and promoting the need for improved Newborn Screening and better medical care for other Rare Disease patients. Both girls will continue to participate in lobbying on Capitol Hill, legislative conferences, Rare Disease Congressional Caucuses, and monthly webinars to raise awareness.
