Special Ed Receives $175,800 Grant

The California Department of Education(CDE) recently awarded The Classical Academies a grant totaling $175,800 for students with disabilities ages 16-22. The Transition Partnership Program will allow Classical Academy High School special education staff to partner with the Department of Rehabilitation to prepare students for the workplace by providing them with an array of services that will culminate in successful student placement in competitive, integrated employment (CIE), ultimately creating lifelong learning and improving quality of life. CAHS is the first charter school with its own Local Education Agency to be awarded this grant. The funding will provide $58,600 per year for three years and can be renewed in the future. “This partnership will provide training, education, and life skills that will help our students be successful in life” stated Director of SpecialEducation Cori Coffey. “I am looking forward to helping more studentswith special needs make the successful transition from school to work,and independent living.” Melissa Hilbig, Transition Specialist added,"This grant and partnership provides us the opportunity to shift fromacademics to intentional, direct instruction of essential pre-employmenttransition services and to serve a student population that is underrepresented in the workforce."
